ACTIVITY GROUPS Book Discussion is held on the 4th Thursday of most months. Members take advantage of the book discussion held at Brentwood Library, at the corner of Brentwood Drive and Seminole, at 1:30 p.m. Each quarter book discussions are published in the Springfield-Green County Library’s Bookends. Books are set-aside on reserve by the library for the discussion. Bridge is offered in a variety of formats in the club. The membership chairperson will get you in contract with a group leader as a sub or on a list to start a new group. Marathon bridge groups begin in September of each year and end in May of the following. All these groups maintain a substitute list. Bunco is an easy and fun dice game usually played by twelve people or a number divisible by four. As a result, substitutes are often needed. The majority of dates on our calendar are for afternoon bunco. Each permanent member of a group is expected to share in hostess duties; however, the group defines them. Each group, if any, determines wager amounts. Dining-In is a couples’ group that meets in one another’s homes. The group members take turns sharing hostess duties. The hostess prepares a main course and the guests bring side dishes. The meeting time varies from once a month to a little longer according to the group’s needs. Ever Green Garden Club’s theme this year is a “Continued Commitment to our Community”. The garden club features different speakers as well as opportunities to visit gardens and to socialize. Even an inexperienced gardener can benefit from this group. Hand & Foot is a version of Canasta or a rummy-type card game played with several decks of cards. The group meets at Kaldi’s Coffee House on Battlefield on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Happenings! Compiles a calendar of local events for publication in our SHC newsletter. Members with calendar worthy events are asked to contact the chairperson before the 10th of each month to allow her to coordinate the Happenings! Calendar. Ladies Night Out is an opportunity for members to meet and dine with a group of SHC members. Ladies are polled and plans are made for the next outing before the current meal is finished. Time and location is posted in the monthly newsletter Mah Jong is a fun rummy-type game played with unique Chinese tiles similar to dominoes. The group meets twice monthly in the afternoon. The newsletter will announce the dates and location. “Newbies” are encouraged to come and watch the game being played. Matinee Ladies meet the last Sunday of the month. The chairperson selects a movie and a light meal is enjoyed after the performance. See Missouri is a day trip group. This group will unveil their plans for interested members in the newsletter. In the past we have arranged for the busing of members for fun tours at unique places. Stitch & Sip is essentially a coffee klatch for those who enjoy bringing a project of their own along to sit and visit. Members of this group take turns as hostess -- sometimes in their own homes or at Ozark Highlands Clubhouse. The Three R’s is a group of retired teachers meeting for lunch and sometimes an adventure. They promise not to shop talk much – but old habits die-hard. They take summers off. TLC Group is a group of nurses both working and semi-retired that meet the last Friday of the month. Their activities run the gamut from shopping, to short trips, to a simple lunch out. WIN (Women Investing Now) is an invest club who meet in the morning on the second Tuesday of each month. They learn valuable skills investigating and purchasing stocks. The group has a history of money making!! Club members are encouraged to participate in any or all activity groups. Activity groups are comprised of members who wish to meet together to share common interests and socialize. New groups are started regularly as interests arise. The Membership Chairperson can direct you to leaders of the groups. |
